Google maps road directions: here

Follow the Fv 63 road from Åndalsnes towards the Trollstigen road. The starting point for the Kløvstien trail is 1.3  km south of Trollstigen Gjestegård. Park at the car park beside the road down to Bøsetra, at the Kløvstien trail information board.

Walk 100 metres along the road, and turn left onto the tractor road, signposted Kløvstien. Walk to the end of the tractor road, where it comes to the river Istra. The path continues into the forest and up to a bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left. The path is well-marked. Knutsetra summer pasture farm is situated to the left some way up the first slope.

From Knutsetra, you follow a tractor road up to a crossroads in the spruce forest where there is a bridge down to the left. Continue straight ahead along the path that follows the foot of the mountain up towards Stigfossen waterfall. There is a steep section, which is well secured by chains and new steps, 150 metres before you come to Stigfossbrua bridge.

After the bridge, you must follow the car road around two bends before the path turns up to the left. The path is clearly marked and crosses the car road twice more before it ends at the visitor centre at the Trollstigen road.

From time immemorial, people have travelled along Trollstigen to get to Sunnmøre and Romsdalen. They travelled on horseback or on foot along the old Kløvstien path. From the 16th century, farmers travelled this path with horses and cattle to get to the market in Romsdal. According to tradition, horses were bound head to tail, but this did not prevent both cattle and horses ending up in the Stigfossen waterfall. Small information boards have been erected along Kløvstien path.
